Budapest

Budapest is amazing - but I could wish it less hot! I think it was 36 degrees today. We set out early when it was cooler (though not what you'd call cool!) got the tram to the metro, then into the city centre. We went over the river to Buda and got the funicular up to the castle, which is more of a palace. We had coffee up here but they didn't take visa so we both tried the adjacent atm and no money came out! We weren't sure if we had been charged and/or if it was a scammers thing where they read your pin! Anyway we couldn't pay for the drinks without searching out another atm. Luckily some kind people at the next table overheard our dilemma and said they'd pay which was really nice of them. We've been online and it looks ok, probably the machine had run out of money!
The castle

cute funicular

More palatial than castle-like, though there were some ruinous parts at the side that looked medieval.

Near the castle was the Matthias Church...

which was amazing inside, highly decorated with pattern

St Emeric

This was the cafe with the great view down to Pest across the Danube...
where we had the currency crisis.

Over in Pest we walked to St Stephen's Basilica.  We had lunch at the subway on the left of the picture - great view!

We didn't like the inside of this church so much, lots of marble...

but nice stained windows in a side chapel that housed...

...the mummified hand of St Stephan!

Plenty of souvenirs for sale.
