Mackenzie Country

It was a stunning morning this morning.
We got up early and drove to Burkes Pass then down through open, tussocky country to Mackenzie's Pass and memorial.  It was very windy here and coming straight off the snowy mountains it was freezing!  Imagine what it must be like in winter!!!

At the Mackenzie memorial - info is on 3 sides, in English, Maori and Gaelic

Then we went on to Fairlie where we had coffee...

looked at Mackenzie disguised as Robin Hood...

and went on a 1 and 1/2 hour river walk.  We couldn't actually see the river because of the undergrowth...

which we had to climb through at one point.

Then we had a pie at the famous pie shop and spent the afternoon admiring the mountain and lake view at Lake Opuha.
