We have spent a few days in Roxburgh before moving on today
to near Alexandra. We are freedom camped
at Butcher's Dam, below the Old Man Range that still has snow on it! Today was supposed to be sunny and hot. We cycled from Roxburgh Dam to Pinders Pond
this morning and it was sunny but cold.
Then it became overcast and cold - so much for the weather forecast.
When we were at Roxburgh we took a drive on a 4WD track to
see the Lonely Graves. Back in 1865
Horseshoe Bend was a gold mining town that most people had already moved on
from. The story goes that William Rigby
found the body of a young man and buried him.
He had a wooden headboard raised over the grave saying, 'Somebody's
Darling Lies Buried Here'. In 1901 Rigby
wrote to the local paper to say he neither found nor buried 'Somebody's
Darling. However when Rigby died 11
years later he was buried alongside the lonely grave, his headstone reading -
'Here lies the body of William Rigby the man who buried Somebody's
Darling'. As the DOC sign says, 'the
truth shouldn't get in the way of a good story'.
