Going down - I was glad to get onto the seal |
While we were in Cromwell we went to investigate another old
mining area - this one up a 4WD track from Bannockburn. This track goes to the Young Australian mine
and is a walking track that you can - theoretically - drive along. It made the previous day's drive seem like a
motorway! We drove up bare rock in
places where the road wasn't so washed out we were driving at 45 degrees. Worried that we might damage the car and be
stuck - and no-one knew where we were - we turned round after reaching the
ruins of huts at Carricktown.
The weather is very changeable. From flat calm and sun in the morning we got
strong wind and clouds in the afternoon, then warmer and clear skies. Must have been cold that night though because
the next morning there was a fresh dust of snow on the Pisa Range opposite us
and more thickly on the other mountains we could see as we drove to Wanaka.
