We decided to give the deep south another go and drove (through rain) to a freedom camp site at the beach at a place called Monkey Island near Riverton.  As we got closer to the coast the sky became blue and by midday it was sunny and warm (though a cold wind - 'in exposed places' as they say).  We did a tiki-tour of the area in the afternoon/evening and everywhere was very picturesque and - as you see from the photos - blue sky!!

  1. Hi Heather - just caught up with your new blog and ..............wow !! Riverton, Cosy Nook, Monkey Island ! ! ! ! I taught for a number of years at Riverton Primary and those were favourite haunts in the summer weekends. Really enjoying your blogs. England sounded a blast !

  2. Hi 'Vigo' - I remembered that you were at Riverton (the only person I know who has taught there) and I think the town would have changed hugely in some ways (the new waterfront area etc) since your day - but the basic old part would be exactly the same! It was good when we were there in early Feb but so cold in the Catlins/Invercargill in January. How did you stand the winters?

  3. The only part of the winters I didn't like was the wind - otherwise I relished the cold ! ! ! I was there about a year ago and was impressed with the way the town has changed and was very impressed with the museum - a quality facility. Where are you guys up to now?
