We finally left 'Central' and drove from Alex past Cromwell up to Wanaka where we turned north.  The road runs alongside Lake Hawea then crosses over a saddle to Lake Wanaka.  We parked here to make a coffee and a tour bus pulled up beside us.  The driver asked if we wanted to make 40 cups of tea (joking).  We continued along the Haast Pass road stopping for lunch in the Cameron Valley where we did a couple of short walks.  We are obviously back in sandfly territory for the first time in ages - I'd forgotten all about them!  We considered spending more time along this road but decided to continue to Haast Village where we parked at a place that is free to NZMCA members.  It is a merino and possum and honey and souvenir shop with a big parking area.  We just got the last spot!  After parking all by ourselves mostly it is strange to see other busses and vans.  Clear blue skies and mountain views in the late afternoon and evening.
