Rail Trail - Day 3

early start - still chilly

...past some sheep...

...to the highest point of the rail trail

Then we pass a marker for Latitude 45 degrees South

I'm sure the farmers used the railway gates

The trail loops so we cross 45 degrees again

Today we just did a short ride as we had to move the bus and car to near the other end of the trail, then we'll work our way back to Wedderburn over the next couple of days.  It is all down to the logistics of where we can park in relation to how far we can cycle per day.

Anyway we had an early start and cycled from Wedderburn to Oturehua, which involved going uphill for 6kms (oh no!) then downhill for 6kms.  this took us past the highest point on the track (618 metres above sea level) and across 45 degrees south latitude twice.

It was a coolish ride but warmed up as the day progressed.  We went to look at Naseby - an old gold mining area with some well preserved old buildings, now famous for being the curling centre of NZ.  We didn't do the curling.  Next stop Ranfurly, famous for its art deco buildings, then on to the next freedom camping spot at Tiroiti.  The trail goes right past the bus so we can see people passing by in the afternoon heat - its 31 in the bus just now!
