Mountains and Lake waikaremoana
We are parked by the river in Wairoa. Today we drove into the Ureweras to Lake Waikaremoana. We walked to a few waterfalls all in the same area near Aniwaniwa (a couple of 20 min loops) then after lunch did a 2 hour return walk to Lake Waikareiti through big beech trees. After that we did a walk through big tawa trees to a giant rata that is 800-1,000 years old. (For non-NZers rata starts as a vine but ends up strangling it's host and totally covering the tree becoming a tree itself.) Lastly I stayed in the car whilst Malcolm climbed up to a lookout platform with views of Lake Waikaremoana. Now we are pretty tired....about 4 hours walking today - plus Malcolm drove out there - over an hour and half the distance is gravel.
