Boulders

Yay - Summer! Tiki tour north today - to the Hokianga. First stop Koutu Boulders, like the Moeraki ones but bigger. And in such a beautiful place (near Omapere). Lunch at Rawene, the Boatshed Cafe, always love it there. Finally Wairere Boulders, near Horeke. A lovely bush walk amongst uniquely fluted boulders.

These are the Koutu Boulders, concretions formed millions of years ago, many perfect spheres

They grow up to 5 metres in diamater

This one sliced neatly in half

Our favourite cafe in Rawene

Chilling out with cider, then had a great lunch

We wanted to visit Clendon House, built in the 1860s and maintained by heritage New Zealand, but unfortunately it wasn't open...

...so we continued on to the Wairere Boulders, which are massive rocks, fluted by acid rain that has dripped through the kauri trees that once grew in the valley.  now there are walkways, over, through and around the rocks.  Also lots of quirky signs and painted animals...

Tuia 250 celebrations in Whangare

The Tuia 250 fleet were in Whangarei this weekend.  The Endeavour replica ship from Australia was there to celebrate 250 years since Captain Cook's arrival on our shores and the voyaging canoes (waka) celebrate the discovery of New Zealand/Aotearoa by Polynesian people.  Above is the Hainui waka.
