Wandering through Spain - Madrid

After flying to Madrid via Doha we took the metro to Opera station.  I left Malcolm with the luggage while I checked the route, just a 5 minute walk to our hotel through narrow cobbled streets.  I was feeling over warm in my longs!

Our hotel is the building at the end of this street.  After a quick change of clothes we left our suitcases there until we could get into our rooms and went to explore the neighbourhood...

...coffee first.

The buildings nearby were old and the streets narrow and higgledy-piggledy...

We came out onto this road full of interesting shops.  One was a pen maker with a display of quill pens in the window.  nearby we saw a guitar maker.

Next we looked around the Cathedral...

and the crypt where an organ was playing - adding to the atmosphere!

Beside the Cathedral was the Royal Palace...

and beside the Palace gardens leading up to the Opera House

After getting into our room and getting sorted out we went to the area around Opera and had lunch of tapas and cider and sat watching the world go by.
Then we explored some more...

...before heading back to the hotel.  Really loving the architecture, the tiled street names and the little squares with their pavement cafes.

A few days on Waiheke Island

We had an airbnb at Oneroa on Waiheke Island

We arrived on Sunday afternoon and on Monday we went to Onetangi where we walked from the beach to casita Miro where we had wine tasting and lunch....

Entrance to Casita Miro and the Gaudiesque mosaics outside

We had a platter, also individual yummy things...
Then we walked to a nearby vineyard, Obsidian, for more tasting...

Our final vineyard of the day was Tantalus where we had more tasting (I had coffee).

On Tuesday we mainly stayed home.  We had a lunch (prepared by Faith)with salads, bread, crackers, wedges, falafel, cheese... (and made a start on the wine we'd bought the day before)  We played games and read...

On our final day we had a beach walk and brunch overlooking this beach before getting the ferry for Auckland.

A few days on Kawau Island

Five of us headed off to Kawau Island which is in the Hauraki Gulf, a couple of hours drive from home.  We got a water taxi to the wharf at Schoolhouse Bay.  Then we had to carry our bags, food, etc up to the house - one of the buildings on the hillside.

Day two, as forecast was rainy so we hunkered down and played board games, read, watched DVDs, ate and drank...

Day three, sun again...

We got the water taxi back to Sandspit...

...then we went to Matakana for coffee...

...and looked around the markets...

...before heading home.  We stopped at Kaiwaka for cheese and to check out the renovations at funky Utopia Cafe.
